Kansas was a state that was largely inhabited by the American Indian people of Siouan linguistic. These people lived along the banks of the Kansas and Saline rivers as do the tribes of any origin. These people are called the Kaw. The place between the Kansas and Saline rivers is now the region called the central Kansas. The Kansas tribes are a semi-sedentary tribe of people. Their main occupation was hunting and farming. Each tribe had a chief. The chieftains were chosen for their wisdom and bravery. Later on the chiefs were chosen by hereditary. Even then there were some tribes like the Omaha, Osage in which the chiefs son was required to prove that he was worthy of leading the tribe.

Their houses consisted of large conical shaped lodges which accommodated two to three families. The men wore deer skin trousers and breechclouts. They were identified by their peculiar hair style. They plucked all their facial hair including the head hair leaving a trail from the front to the back in a single stream.

Their religious beliefs were quite exhaustive. They believed in the sun, fire the earth and the moons. They also believed in the supernatural sprits and the sprits of the dead. Adolescent boys had to undergo some form of isolation period during which they were required to prove their bravery and dream of their future exploits. This invoked in them a power to carry out great deeds.

The Kansa had a good burial system. They had a separate land marked for the dead. The dead were accompanied by their weapons, food, pipe and garments. The dead were painted on the face by the tribes' women. Then the corpse was covered with bark and a piece of buffalo skin. The body was placed on a shallow grave by a hill and covered with rock slabs.

Their population in the late eighteenth century was a mere 3,000. By the 20th century hardly 600 of them remained. The decline was due to the constant warfare between the tribes, and war with the settlers.
