Manhattan, Kansas


Manhattan (Kansas) city is situated in northeast of Kansas. Here the Big Blue and Kansas (Kaw) rivers meet up. According to the census 2000 the population is 44,831. In 1855, the community was settled, which was named after Manhattan Island. In the late 1850's it was a center for proslavery and antislavery.

In 1855, Poleska and Canton were consolidated as Boston. It was renamed Manhattan next year by mutual agreement between a party of colonists from Cincinnati, Ohio and the Boston Association of Kansas.

In 1626, Peter Minuit, the first director general of New Netherlands province, purchased the island from the local Indians (the Manhattan, a tribe of the Wappinger Confederacy). He paid with trinkets and cloth valued at 60 guilders. At that time it was worth about 11/2 pounds (0. 7 kg) of silver. In 1664, The English came and took over the island, which previously had been incorporated as the city of New Amsterdam in 1653.

It is a manufacturer of sewing patterns, hoses for automobiles and hydraulic equipment. It is known as an educational and research center, as several research intuitions are located here. The University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences was established in 1863, and Manhattan Christian College in 1927.

It is an area of New York City, on Manhattan Island, in southeastern New York State, U. S. The borough extends over onto the Marble Hill section on the mainland. It includes a number of islets in the East River. It is surrounded by the Hudson River in the west, Harlem River and Spuyten Duyvil Creek in the northeast, East River in the east, and Upper New York Bay in the south. Manhattan is often synonymously deemed as New York City

Greater New York was formed with merging of Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Richmond in 1898. It is considered as one of the world's leading commercial, financial, and cultural centers.

In Manhattan, Kan, the main campus is giving a full range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. It has the Division of Biology, Architecture and Design, the A. Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Human Ecology, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine.

Fort Riley, a U. S. Army base, is located nearby.

There are many tourist places to visit. Among these is the famous Broadway. It is one of the world's best-known streets. It also boasts of the world famous skyscrapers of the Empire State Building. Wall Street, the site of major United States stock exchanges and financial institutions, is located in the lower Manhattan area. The United States financial interest is now almost synonymous with Wall Street.
The other places of interests are Greenwich Village, Harlem, and Central Park, the United Nations headquarters; and various cultural and educational institutions. It also includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Opera House, and Columbia University.

Manhattan is a great island district synonymous with New York City surrounded by rivers, and sea and creeks in all of its sides. It is the main business center of the United States.
