Salina Kansas
Salina City is situated over Saline County, in Central Kansas, in United States. William A. Phillips, an antislavery group leader, founded it in 1858. This city was named after Saline River, which comes from Smokey Hill (east). In 1867, the town started developing after the arrival of Union Pacific Railroad. According to the year 1992 census the total population of this city is approximately 45,679. The city was heavily destroyed by floods in 1903. It was later rebuilt.
Salina is basically known for the wheat production, as it is one of the largest wheat growing area in United States. The chief industry of Salina City is the grain milling and flour mills. It has a prehistoric Indian burial ground, which is 4 miles (6 km) east of the city.
Salina is very sought after name in academic sphere, particularly for higher education. Kansas State University was one of the first land-grant universities established in 1863, under the Morrill Act of 1862. Initially, it had occupied the vacant campus of the Blue Mont Central College. After some time it was moved to its current site in 1875. This was for higher education. It was co-educational institute from the beginning. This University was divided into two campuses. The land grant institution is in the main campus. This campus is situated in Manhattan, Kan, U. S. This institute provides the undergraduate and graduate degree programs, these programs consists of the Division of Biology, colleges of Agriculture, the A. Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This institute also provides the programs in Business Administration, Human Ecology, Arts and Sciences, Architecture and Design, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine. It also provides a number of research facilities. A few among these are Konza Prairie, which is an Agricultural Experiment Station. As Salina is the largest city in producing wheat in U. S. , for the better quality of wheat here they established the Wheat Genetics Resource Center. Here, in this center, we can get more information about the different varieties of wheat. The Center for Basic Cancer Research, and a Trigma Mark II nuclear reactor also comes under this institution. The total enrollment of this university is approximately 21,000. After the merger of the Kansas College of Technology with Kansas State, the Salina campus was created in 1991.
Kansas Wesleyan University was established in 1886,in Salina. This University works in association and rules laid down by United Methodist Church. This University provides the bachelor's degree courses in various fields like arts and science, the fine arts, education, business, computer science, law, engineering, communication, performing arts and religious studies. The master's degree in business is also awarded here with different programs. Here they give more importance to education, business, and the health and natural sciences. Here Saint John's Military School was established in 1887.
