The University of Kansas started with 29 men and 26 women in the year 1866. It was the first university of the plains. It was founded by the New Englanders who were against slavery. They founded this land, the Kansas city and wanted the state to be free of slavery. This University was located in the Lawerence, Kan City U. S. The university is not confined to one place. IT is spread through out the state of Kansas. The university was chartered as the Lawrence University in the year 1859. Though founded in the year 1859, the first classes were started in the year 1866. Today it boasts of strengths of over 28,000 students with a faculty of over 1200.

It offers a wide range of Graduate and under graduate courses. The university has two major branches. It's medical branch offers courses on Allied health, conducted at the School of Allied Health, Medicine and Nursing. It's medical center campus is in the city of Kansas and there is also a medical campus in Wichita. The university includes colleges like the College of Liberal arts and sciences, School of law, School of Business, School of architecture, School of engineering and the School of pharmacy. The law school was started in the year 1893 though law was taught from the year 1878. Degrees in Medicine was offered in the year 1905. It moved to its present location the Medical Center in the year 1924. Research facilities are also included in its premises. The research facilities offered are Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, The Bureau of Child Research, The Center for Environmental Health, The Tertiary Oil Recovery Project, and a space technology research centre.

(a) The cross country course of Kansas University is considered the toughest in the nation and as well as the most beautiful. It is considered that the walk to class up the hill is a more daunting task than taking a run through the Kansas University cross country course.
(b) The statue of Jimmy green installed in the Jay hawk Boulevard was created by the famous sculptor Daniel Chester French. Daniel Chester was best known for his statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial at Washington D. C.
(c) The city of Kansas stands sixth for the per capita degrees earned by the people of the state.
(d) The students of architecture receive hands on training at this university. They gain the experience by building houses, low cost and affordable houses.
(e) Students of the University have these scholarship halls, where the stay is quite affordable. Students have to do their own cooking and cleaning and also take leadership roles in self governing their halls.
(f) The first music therapy program was created at the Kansas University in the year 1947. Today it is a widely accepted form of cure.
(g) It was at this university in the year 1905 that helium was discovered to this world.
(h) The game of basket ball was invented here. The first coach of the game Mr James Naismith invented the game here.
(i) Kansas University Medical students created and operated the Jaydoc free clinic. It provided free medical treatment and primary health care at no cost.
